The personal story of Gizela Fudem – a Holocaust Survivor – inspired a unique educational project which connected two cities: Tarnów and Wrocław – places with completely different histories and identities. Although the cities’ histories are so different, the story of Gizela Fudem builds bridges between them and between young people who took part in the project.
In her interview, Gizela Fudem painted a vivid picture of the pre-war Jewish community in Tarnów with extraordinary sensitivity and detail – vibrant, culturally and spiritually rich. She recounted its dramatic end during the Holocaust and the personal, tragic experiences that left a lasting mark on her life. After the war, like many survivors, Gizela began a new life in Lower Silesia – in Wrocław. There, she started a family, studied, and worked, contributing to the reconstruction of post-war society.
For young people from Tarnów and Wrocław, Gizela Fudem’s story became a starting point for a profound reflection on the past, memory, and identity. The students were incredibly committed to their research: they learned about Gizela Fudem’s fate, visited places connected with her life, and searched archives, discovering unique documents, photographs, and memoirs. Their work is a scholarly exploration of history, as well as an emotional journey into the past – an encounter with the fate of a person who, despite tragedy, was able to rebuild her life.
The exhibition is the result of many months of intense work, collaboration, and passion on the part of these young people. It is proof of their maturity, empathy, and profound understanding of the importance of historical memory. Thanks to their commitment, Gizela Fudem’s story has gained new life – becoming not only a reminder of the past but also an inspiration for building dialogue between people and cities.
The exhibition was created as part of an inter-school project carried out by students from the General J. Jasiński 5th High School in Wrocław and the Economic and Horticultural School in Tarnów, in cooperation with the Galicia Jewish Museum and Centropa.
