We would like to invite you to a Q&A session with Prof. Norman Davies, covering his latest book, “Galicja” (“Galicia”), published in 2023 by the Znak Horyzont Publishing House.
Norman Davies’s best style demonstrates the fate of the land that once belonged to Poland. Where many nations of Central-East Europe used to live, and many religions coexisted. There is a story of the myth and legend of Galicia told from the perspective of grand historical events but also through the stories of the usual inhabitants of this place. This is where, during the partitions of Poland, Polish culture managed to survive. This is also where the idea of a Ukrainian nation was born. Furthermore, the fates of the Habsburg and Potocki families were intertwined. Likewise, is where on one street, one could hear Polish, German, Yiddish, and Rusyn.
However, Davies does not tell us an idyllic story. His Galicia is bitter-sweet.
Norman Richard Davies was born in 1939 in Bolton. He studied history e.g. at Oxford University. He received his PhD in 1973 at the Jagiellonian University of Krakow. One of his most famous books is “Boże Igrzysko. Historia Polski”, which Prof. Davies wrote in Polish and published in two volumes. Thanks to his work, the history of Poland became much more accessible in the West. In his works he described it meticulously. He is an author of several dozen publications in Polish and English.
