Themed guided tour: Unimaginable – (Non-)Existent. Synagogues, Shtibls, and Prayer Houses of Krakow

Grodzka, Szeroka, Celna, Szpitalna, Kościuszki… Most of Krakow’s inhabitants know these names of the streets as well as many more which are part of the city center. We know what they are famous for and which buildings are located there. However, in most cases we have no idea about the (non-)existent Jewish prayer houses which were once there. Before the Second World War Krakow was a place, where several dozen synagogues, shtibls and Beit haMidrashim were functioning. Usually they were located in private apartments or in the courtyards of tenement houses. Do these places still exist today? And if not, can we, at least symbolically, bring them to life?

We would like to invite you to a themed guided tour accompanying the exhibition “Unimaginable. The Void After the Great Synagogues”. We will go through the city to visit the sites of former Jewish prayer houses, where there existed or still exist traces of the participants of prayer services – the witnesses of the history of our city.
