“Next Year In Kraków” – Educational board game

“Next Year In Kraków” – Educational board game

“Next Year in Krakow” is a cooperative game during which players visit several Polish cities associated with Jewish culture, and in each of them, they take part in the celebration of one of the Jewish holidays. The entire game has a symbolic dimension. During the journey, participants learn about the history of the Jewish community of a given city, perform short rituals, and answer questions that allow them to move on – to the next town.

The game was created in two versions: large format, to be played on the floor, and cards version, to be played on a table.

The game is intended for older children, teenagers, and adults.

The project is a response to the lack of educational tools for Polish Jewish children and youth, dedicated to and representing the identities and perspectives of the Jewish communities in Poland. The final product of this project – a board game in two formats – will be used in educational activities for both Jewish and non-Jewish audiences.

The concept is based on the cycle of holidays – focusing on time, and on different locations reflecting Jewish communities and heritage in Poland – focusing on space, and a symbolic and artistic dimension. The design of the game allows various organizational arrangements. The game is flexible and can be expanded in the future, with additional new elements representing the changes and growth of the Jewish community. Jewish communities and community organizations in Poland will receive a copy of the game in regular format. The large-format versions will be used by the Galicia Jewish Museum, Mifgash, and JCC Kraków.

Project supported by the Dutch Jewish Humanitarian Fund.
