“Poza chederem” (“Beyond Cheder”) – meeting with Dr. Alicja Maślak-Maciejewska, Author of the Book

Led by: Jacek Stawiski

From the end of the 19th century, most Jewish children in Galicia attended public schools. As an institution, the school engaged with the Jewish community in various ways: Jews worked as teachers and were part of the educational boards, congregations were obligated to provide religious classes for the community, and religious textbooks were written and published during that time. Education was a politically important topic which both united and divided society. The book portrays the Jewish experience of school in a complex and multifaceted manner. It reveals more about daily life, relationships between people, symbols, and the school as a space. It also shows us that the popularisation of education had a crucial meaning for the societal history of Galician Jews, and that it is difficult to write about schools in Galicia without researching the Jewish education system.
