The House of Graves: Cemeteries and Death in Jewish Culture – The New Jewish Cemetery at Miodowa Street. Guided Tour

Starting Point: Galicia Jewish Museum, ul. Dajwór 18
Led by: Bartosz Wencel

Some of the most recognizable places associated with Jewish culture are cemeteries. In many towns, cemeteries are the only remaining trace of former Jewish communities. Krakow, of course, is different. Yet for many, a Jewish cemetery remains an unfamiliar and mysterious place, with “exotic” tombstone inscriptions. We invite you to join a guided tour of the Jewish cemetery on Miodowa Street. Together, we will explore key elements of Jewish traditions and folklore surrounding death and burial. We’ll also look at how these customs have evolved over the past 200 years. Along the way, we’ll learn about Krakow’s Jewish citizens buried there— because the history of our city cannot be understood without them
