“Ocaleni z Drohobycza” (“Saved from Drohobych”) – a meeting with Katarzyna Skopiec, author of the book and screening of the film “What Humans Do” (dir. Ruth Behar)

“Saved from Drohobych” is a story of courage and humanity in the darkest times of war. The author presents unknown heroes from the time of the Second World War, who are her grandparents, Sława and Izydor Wołosiańscy, who for almost two years hid 39 Jews in their basement. All of them survived. The Wołosiańscy couple were honored with the Righteous Among the Nations medal.

“I always wanted to tell this story to the world, to introduce my grandparents to the people, but also to remind the audience of this dark time as a warning that it should never return. This was the main reason for which I founded the Humanosh Sława and Izek Wołosiańscy Foundation. What is interesting, my grandparents, especially my grandmother, never thought of themselves as heroes. My grandma often repeated that she did this because it was the thing one should have done. It was obvious one had to rescue their friends, acquaintances, and sometimes also people one did not know at all” – says the author, Katarzyna Skopiec.

The meeting with the author will be preceded by a screening of the film “What Humans Do”. It was directed by Ruth Behar, a dentist from Israel. By chance, she heard of the story of the Wołosiańscy couple from a friend, and she became so fascinated with it, she decided to film it. After conversations with Katarzyna Skopiec, members of her family, and the volunteers of the foundation, Ruth decided not only to depict the story from the Second World War but also the current work and humanitarian projects led by the foundation.
