For a few years now, one of the dominant themes in the Polish public debate on history is people’s history. From “Prześniona rewolucja” by Andrzej Leder, through “Ludowa historia Polski” by Adam Leszczyński, “Chamstwo” by Kacper Pobłocki, “Cham i pan” by Andrzej Chwalba and Wojciech Harpula, to the bestselling “Chłopki” by Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak, but also essays, memoirs, and fiction narratives – the theme of peasant history – much more rarely workers’ history – as a perspective in Polish history is both researched as much as it is exploited. The published books include both scientific analyses, research, and thoroughly written reports as well as popular publications which make use of the trend for the so-called “folk turn”.
We would like to invite you to the last discussion from the “New Perspective” series. The participants will include one of the most interesting and most respected authors of books on people’s history of Poland: Prof. Andrzej Chwalba, Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak, and Prof. Adam Leszczyński. The discussion will be led by Michał Nogaś.
In Polish. Free admission.
The project “New Perspectives. A Contemporary Reading of History” is a series of discussions on the most important research and publications, which, during the last 20 years, changed our views on Polish history and society by reorganizing the directions of scientific research and significantly contributing to the development of a specific group of publications. Open, admission-free panel discussions will be participated in by scientists, historians, non-fiction writers, and journalists.
The project was financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland from the Fund for Promoting Culture.
