The Galicia Jewish Museum’s 20th anniversary will be celebrated with a special concert by a band that, just like the museum, is strongly connected to Krakow’s district of Kazimierz, and whose works embody all the best of Klezmer music.

Kroke (in Yiddish: Krakow) was established in 1992 by three friends: Tomasz Kukurba, Jerzy Bawoł, and Tomasz Lato. Though they are graduates of the Academy of Music in Krakow, they are also artists who are constantly evolving, and they do not shy away from experimenting with jazz and contemporary music.

The band, initially associated mainly with Klezmer music, is now known for blending various genres. The artists draw inspiration from ethnic music from around the world, but always enrich their works with their own improvisations. In this way, Kroke creates its own style, transcending borders, time, and forms, which not only has been noticed by the audience, but also appreciated by artists all over the world.

Steven Spielberg, amazed by a Kroke concert he had attended, invited the band to Jerusalem for a performance during the Survivors Reunion ceremony. Thanks to Peter Gabriel, the band was introduced at the WOMAD Festival in Great Britain. Their track “The Secrets of the Life Tree” can be found on the soundtrack of “Inland Empire” by David Lynch. The meeting of Kroke and Nigel Kennedy resulted in a joint work: the album “East Meets East”. In recent years the band has been cooperating with admired artists such as: Anna Maria Jopek, Edyta Geppert, Tomasz Stańko, Maja Sikorowska, Krzysztof Herdzin, the Norwegian band Tindra, Spanish violinist Diego Galaz, Mongolian vocalist Urna Chahar Tugchi, as well as orchestras from all over the world: Sinfonietta Cracovia, Aukso, Elbląska Orkiestra Kameralna, Västerås Sinfonietta, Orquesta Sinfónica de Burgos, Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg. Kroke has been performing at the most prestigious music festivals all over the world.
