Film screening: “Only This Forest”
dir. Jan Łomnicki, 1991
A once rich doctor’s wife pays good money to her former washerwoman for bringing her only daughter out of the ghetto and keeping her with the washerwoman’s family in the country. Kuglawcowa is reluctant and motivated only by money, but she takes the girl out of the city and on her way to the country she slowly becomes attached to the child. There is “only this forest” left on their way, when they meet a German gendarme and Rutka loses her family photograph which reveals her Jewish identity.
