“Z widokiem na Polskę. Sąsiedzi, kciuk Stalina, czeski dług i KGB” (“With a View of Poland: Neighbors, Stalin’s Thumb, Czech Debt, and the KGB”) is a collection of eight non-fiction pieces written by journalists of Onet.pl: Witold Jurasz, Marcin Terlik, Katarzyna Barczyk-Sikora, Magdalena Rigamonti, Monika Waluś, Tomasz Mateusiak, Diana Wawrzusiszyn, and Alicja Staszak.
This is a book for those who not only want to get to understand the “Other” but also to understand themselves; to look at Poland with the eyes of its neighbors and verify, how open we are, or on the contrary: how much are we ruled by stereotypes. “With a View of Poland” is a book deeply rooted in today. It was created at a time of geopolitical turbulence, migrations, redefinition of national and European identities, it is a book which asks questions about how we perceive one another and how the images we believe are at odds with reality.
These non-fiction works make up a polyphonic story about obvious and not-so-obvious places, about complicated and surprisingly close relationships. These are stories about people whose daily lives rarely make headlines, however, they best reflect the pulse of contemporary Central and Eastern Europe. The book encourages conversations about being someone’s neighbor, responsibility for one’s words, historical memory, and contemporary divisions.
