The meeting will focus on an analysis of the fates of the people living at Józefińska Street – a place which was the institutional and societal center of the Krakow Ghetto. This was where the key institutions were located: the Jewish hospital, baths, Arbeitsamt, the Jewish Social Self-Help, the orphanage, and the headquarters of the Jewish Ghetto Police. These places significantly shaped the daily lives of people imprisoned in the Krakow Ghetto. During the discussion we will take a look at this space both from a historical and topographic perspective. We will think of how the proximity of offices and institutions impacted the situation of the tenants living nearby and did a residential address mean more than just a point on a map? Was it a factor that increased chances of survival or on the contrary: did it increase the threat?

This discussion is a result of an NCN (OPUS 26) project titled “Beyond the Walls of the Krakow Ghetto (1941-1943)”, conducted by Dr. Alicja Jarkowska from the Institute of History of the Jagiellonian University. The discussion will feature members and collaborators of the project: Dr. Martyna Grądzka-Rejak, Dr. Stanisław Szombara, Katarzyna Boryczko, Aleksandra Kolanko, Kaja Kępczyńska, and Cristian Dumitrica.
