Concert: New Voices of Yiddish Song – Isabel Frey, Benjy Fox-Rosen, and Esther Wratschko, feat. Soveles

Yiddish is often associated with being old, outdated or extinct. But during this event, three Vienna-based Yiddish singers and songwriters will join forces for a new program celebrating the creative potential and vibrant dynamism of contemporary Yiddish song. The program is a musical potpourri, ranging from Isabel Frey’s new revolutionary Yiddish songs, over Esther Wratschko’s rearrangements of Yiddish folksongs and Wienerlied, to Benjy Fox-Rosen’s haunting song cycle of Mordechai Gebirtig’s poetry. Accompanying themselves with guitar, piano, bass and synthesizer, Frey, Wratschko and Fox-Rosen create a blended soundscape of different textures, melodies, modes and rhythms, located somewhere between klezmer, folk, pop and art song. Isabel Frey and Esther Wratschko will also perform songs from their Yiddish feminist a capella duo “Soveles”, which rearranges traditional Yiddish ballads for two voices. This program will certainly disrupt everything you thought you knew about Yiddish music.
