“Chciałabym opowiedzieć, jak zginęło miasto…” (“I Would Like to Tell You, How a City Perished…”). Meeting with Karolina Panz, author of the book

The book is the result of years of research, based on thousands of documents, photographs, letters, and archival records. From scattered traces, the author recreates the life and destruction of the Jewish community of Nowy Targ – a world that ceased to exist but left behind numerous traces. From patiently collected materials, she weaves a story of people whose lives and deaths were interwoven with the reality of a provincial town. A decisive moment in this work was a meeting with Janet Applefield, born Gustawa Singer. Thanks to her and the materials she provided, it became possible to look at the history of Jewish life in Nowy Targ from the perspective of a single family. Therefore, the book’s narrative unfolds in two threads – encompassing the fate of the Singer family and the community of approximately two thousand Jews of Nowy Targ. The author does not seek to make these stories unique or typical. She creates a microhistorical record of the unimaginable, expressed through detailed descriptions of human fates and restoring the names and faces of the victims of the Holocaust in the Polish countryside.
