“Chasydzkie opowieści. Antologia” (“Hasidic Stories. An Anthology”) – a meeting with Dr. Wojciech Tworek, Dr. Marek Tuszewicki, and Prof. Marcin Wodziński

Led by: Dr. Karolina Koprowska

Hasidism originated in the southeastern borderlands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth among a small group of Kabbalists and mystics, but soon became one of the largest religious movements among Eastern European Jews.

Stories are one of the most important forms of Hassidic culture. This anthology, edited by Dr. Wojciech Tworek and Prof. Marcin Wodziński, depicts the phenomenon of this literary genre. Here, readers will find stories about miracles, documentaries, pieces of historical significance, and more.

The oldest texts in the anthology emerge from the first collections of stories, from 1814 and 1815. The newest are the yet-unpublished stories which were recorded especially for this edition by Israeli Hassidim in 2022. The Edition by the Polish National Library not only depicts the changes in this literary genre from its beginnings until today, but also underlines the living nature of this tradition.

The translations were conducted from Yiddish and Hebrew to Polish by: A. Brudło, A. Brzozowska, J. Budzik, J. Czeska-Kosiba, J. Doktór, A. Ganczarska, A. Kałużna, M. Lipska, A. Paluch, M. Tuszewicki, W. Tworek, W. Urbańska, M. Wodziński, and P. Zadworny. The English to Polish translation was completed by M. Wójcik.
