For 20 years the Galicia Jewish Museum has been presenting the history and heritage of the Jewish community of the historical region of Galicia through its permanent and temporary exhibitions. In order to get to know this history better and to understand it, we would like to invite you on a few trips during which we will show you small towns near Krakow, where we will follow the traces of their Jewish population.
In close proximity, only a 40-minute-drive from Krakow, you will find Bochnia, a town known mainly for one of the oldest salt mines in this part of the world. However, the town was also home to prewar Jewish communities. In fact, Bochnia can be proud of having one of the oldest Jewish communities in southern Poland! The story of this community was tumultuous and very much connected to the nearby town of Nowy Wiśnicz. If you want to find out more about the history of Polish Jews, we would like to invite you to a trip to these two towns, where through the example of microhistory, we will tell you the story of the complicated fates of citizens of this region.
