On International Dog Day we would like to invite you to a meeting with Marcin Wilk.

“Better Species” is a story about an unusual relation between human animals and non-human animals: a relation between dogs and people. This book, however, is not yet another expert account on dogs and their problems. It is rather an attempt to take a critical (and subjective) look at chosen aspects of the relation between dogs and humans. In this sense, it is as much a story about dogs as it is about humans, who continuously “create” dogs.

“Better Species” is also not a story about history, at least not directly. Marcin Wilk is most interested in the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and the interwar period. The 19th century is of particular importance because it was during this period that veterinary knowledge broadened, and humans began to participate in large-scale experiments with dog breeds. This is when, as some scholars say, a canine modernism began, which has lasted until today and the effects of which we can still observe. In this way, this is a story of both history and modernity.
