Books, articles, and films were abundant on the history of Poland during the war and occupation. However, there was no such synthesis. In his latest book, Prof. Andrzej Chwalba clearly describes the story of Polish heroism and martyrdom. Considering Poland bled and fought as never before.
However, during these years, Polish citizens led their daily lives. They fell in love, went to theaters, raised their children, and did their best to meet their basic needs.
This reality was a shared experience for millions of people. It was not resistance or extermination. It was crucial to balance the military and political story with a way to highlight how the economy and civil life functioned during these years. What did daily life in occupied Poland look like throughout the country? How was it to live under the occupation during summer and during winter? How did civilians get food, clothes, and fuel?
This depiction of 1939-1945 makes the book by Prof. Andrzej Chwalba a meaningful publication. “Polska krwawi. Polska Walczy” is a source of knowledge for those who believe that they do not know enough about the history of Poland during the Second World War. It is also a great reading adventure for those who think they know all they should know.
Prof. Andrzej Chwalba is a historian, a known advocate of history, professor, lecturer at the Jagiellonian University of Krakow, and deputy director of the Polish History Association. He is an expert in Polish and world history of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of Krakow, and the history of both world wars. He is an author and co-author of over 30 books.
