The exhibition showcasing the winning work of the second edition of the Chris Schwarz Memorial Art Award – “A Safe Place”

In June, the Galicia Jewish Museum will host the opening of the exhibition showcasing the winning work of the second edition of the Chris Schwarz Memorial Art Award – “A Safe Place.” Chris Schwarz was a British photo journalist and the founder and first director of the Galicia Jewish Museum. His intellectual courage, willingness to ask the most difficult questions and efforts made to answer them brought countless people together and gave them a new understanding of Polish-Jewish history. Chris died prematurely in 2007, but the Museum continues his mission to this day.

In 2018, the Galicia Jewish Museum inaugurated an open-call art competition dedicated to his memory. It is intended to be a cyclical competition with each edition devoted to a different theme. The winner of the competition’s second edition is Xawery Deskur and his work “The Place of Singing Stones.” The exhibition is a multimedia spatial installation inspired by the figure of Sat-Okh – Stanisław Supłatowicz, otherwise known as the “Polish Indian.” The exhibition will be on display at the Mirisch & Lebenheim Gallery of the Galicia Jewish Museum from June 15 to September 3, 2023.
