Concert: "Strands: Improvisations on Identity"

Please note that due to the National Mourning following the tragic death of Mr. Paweł Adamowicz, the mayor of Gdańsk, the concert by Alex Roth, Wacław Zimpel, and Hubert Zemler has been rescheduled to Wednesday 23rd January 2019 at 8.30pm.

Composer, improviser, guitarist, producer and interdisciplinary artist Alex Roth has been described as "one of contemporary music’s most innovative and impressive talents" (musicOMH). His work encompasses solo, chamber, choral and orchestral concert music, dance and theatre scores and sound installations, alongside touring and recording with numerous bands. Among these are electric guitar ensemble Future Currents and electro-acoustic chamber ensemble Sefiroth, a vehicle for radical explorations of traditional Sephardic repertoire. Other notable collaborations have included the London Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Blue-Eyed Hawk, singer/songwriter Alice Zawadzki and Laura Jurd's Human Spirit.

Supported by Arts Council England and British Council, Alex is currently artist-in-residence at the Galicia Jewish Museum, researching historical and contemporary Polish-Jewish life and its resonances with his own experience as a descendent of Polish Jews returning to his ancestral homeland. This concert, with a reciprocal date at Jazz Café POSK in London, represents the culmination of this project, for which Alex is joined by two of Poland’s most acclaimed contemporary musicians.

Clarinetist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Wacław Zimpel is one of the most original and unique talents to have emerged from Poland this millennium. Inspired as much by jazz as by electronics, minimalism and roots music from across the world, his solo releases and myriad collaborations don’t so much blur boundaries as eradicate them altogether.

Hubert Zemler is a percussionist, composer and improviser involved in countless projects across classical, experimental, improv and pop music. These include collaborations with Piotr Kurek (as Piętnastka), Wacław Zimpel (LAM, To Tu Orchestra), Kamil Szuszkiewicz and Mitch & Mitch alongside solo interpretations of renowned composers such as Per Nørgård and Steve Reich.
