Concert: Kinga Rataj - ‘Tribute to Amália Rodrigues’

Amália Rodrigues was an extraordinary musician whose work has garnered her the title ‘the queen of fado’. She performed and promoted Portuguese fado music all over the world and revived the genre after years of political upheaval in Portugal.

Amália Rodrigues was born in 1920 in Lisbon, meaning that 2020 will mark the anniversary of what would have been her 100th birthday. As an homage to ‘the queen of fado’, Kinga Rataj presents a special concert - “Tribute to Amália Rodrigues”.

Kinga Rataj is one of the most fascinating vocal discoveries of Poland, and a laureate of multiple music festivals. Her musical breakthrough was in 2006 when she won the Grand Prix and the Award of the President of the Polish National Television for the best debut on the 42nd Festival of Student Songs in Krakow. Kinga’s fascination  with fado, the Portuguese language and culture - and especially the repertoire of Amália Rodrigues -  resulted in a successful tour in which the classic fado genre is mixed with jazz, tango, and flamenco. The tour has been charming audiences all over Poland since 2010. Her talent even caught the eye of fado enthusiasts in Portugal, and Kinga Rataj was invited to perform at the Internacional de Fado de Catalunya (“Inter-Fado”). A clip of her performance received “video of the week” status on the leading fado music website, Portal do Fado.

Since then, Kinga Rataj has performed hundreds of fado concerts all over Poland. She graces us with her vocal talent and the music of Amália Rodrigues' repertoire.
